MuSIC

At All Saints C of E Infant School, Music is a vibrant and joyful part of our daily learning experience. We believe that music helps children express themselves, develop creativity, and build confidence. Through our music program, Kapow, students are supported to develop a life-long love of music.

The program focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding children need in order to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. In addition, the programme introduces children to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities.

Through following the programme, children will develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down.

As well as learning to develop their musical skills, our curriculum helps children develop team-work, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.

Kapow Primary’s Music scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets outlined in the National curriculum and the aims of the scheme align with those in the National curriculum.

Intent

At All Saints, our aims are to:

  • ensure our children to have a fun musical education, which inspires and provides them with a firm understanding of what music is through listening, evaluating, improvising, composing, singing, playing and performing.
  • introduce children to an increasing range of music from across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
  • ensure children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and can use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
  • strive to provide rich learning opportunities through our extra-curricular music provision to develop our children’s exposure and opportunities for music beyond the classroom.

What We Offer

  • Classroom Music Lessons: All students participate in weekly whole class music lessons where they sing, move to music, and play instruments like drums, xylophones, and more. These lessons help children learn about rhythm, pitch, and musical patterns in a fun, interactive way.
  • Whole Class Recorder Lessons: Children in Years 1 and 2 take part in whole class recorder lessons. These lessons are paid for by parents and run by Surrey Arts.
  • School Performances: Pupils have the opportunity to participate in seasonal performances, where they showcase their musical talents to friends and family. Performances include the Harvest Concert, The Nativity, the Easter Concert, Class Assemblies and the Year 2 Leavers Service. Furthermore, children are invited to take part in All Age Services at Alll Saints Church where they take part in musical performances.
  • Peripatetic Lessons: For students who want to learn a specific instrument, we offer individual or group lessons in piano and guitar taught by experienced music teachers from Surrey Arts
  • Enrichment opportunities: As a school we are committed to providing opportunities for all children to perform outside of the school environment. For example, each year the school takes part in Farnham’s Got Talent and Farnham Carnival. In addition, children participate in extra-curricular musical activities such as the Farnham Singing Spree at the Farnham Maltings.
  • Clubs: Children are provided with the opportunity to take part in musical activities as part of our after-school club offering. For example, children can take part in our Musical Theatre Club: Showshack on a Monday after school.

Why Music is Important:

Music education is not just about learning notes and rhythms—it helps children in many areas of their development. Music:

  • boosts creativity and imagination as well as encourages them to express their feelings and ideas in unique ways.
  • improves concentration and memory, which can help with other academic subjects.
  • builds teamwork and confidence. Whether performing in a group or learning an instrument, students develop confidence and teamwork skills that will benefit them in all areas of life.
