Art

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination and is an important area of children’s learning. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It is expected that during their time at All Saints, children are given opportunities to explore and evaluate Art and Design artists and communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Intent

At All Saints C of E Infant School, our intent is that children produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences. We want children to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other Art and Design techniques such as: craft and design. Children are taught to evaluate and analyse their creative works using subject-specific language. They will be taught about great artists and the historical and cultural development of Art and Design. Finally, our aim is that all children meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for Art and Design.

Implementation

Our progression of knowledge and skills shows the skills that are taught within each year group and how these skills develop to ensure that attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage. Our units fully scaffold and support essential and age appropriate, sequenced learning, and are flexible enough to be adapted to form cross-curricular links with the school curriculum. Creativity and independent outcomes are robustly embedded into our units, supporting students in learning how to make their own creative choices and decisions, so that their Art and Design outcomes, whilst still being knowledge-rich, are unique to the pupil and personal.

Lessons are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas. Guidance on how to adapt lessons is available to ensure that lessons can be accessed and enjoyed by all pupils and opportunities to stretch pupils’ learning are available when required. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key knowledge and techniques learned, encouraging recall of skills processes, key facts and vocabulary.

The Kapow Art scheme of work supports teachers who may lack confidence in their own Art and Design artistic abilities. Pupil videos created by subject specialists help pupils to see Art and Design techniques modelled by experts, to ensure the delivery of Art and Design is of the highest quality. Each unit of lessons includes multiple teacher videos to develop subject knowledge and support ongoing CPD.

There are five lessons taught in each Art and Design unit. Teachers may want to teach one hour of Art a week or block out an afternoon or a day to teach the Art curriculum. Teachers may use their discretion to timetable their Art and Design lessons. Teachers must let parents know in advance if their child needs to bring in any resources from home in advance such as newspaper.

Impact

At the end of each half term, through formative assessment, staff measure the impact that the curriculum is having on the pupils’ learning. Staff use the information gathered to identify gaps in children’s learning and then plan sessions to fill these. In each Art and Design lesson, the children are involved in evaluating their work through purposeful dialogue, analysing one another’s work and making decisions about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make. By taking part and Design in regular discussions about Art and Design, children will not only, know facts and key information about Art and Design, but they will be able to talk confidently about their own learning journey, have higher metacognitive skills and have a growing understanding of how to improve.
